  Programs

If the idea of the universe is presented to the child in the right way, it will do more for him that just arouse his interest, for it will create in him admiration and wonder, a feeling loftier than any interest and more satisfying.

 - Maria Montessori

BMFS offers programs for children age 22 months to twelve years (toddler through sixth grade). Our toddler and preschool classes meet mornings from 8:30-11:45am, with an extended day for kindergarten age children until 3:00pm. We provide early morning care beginning at 7:30am, and afternoon care until 5:00pm.

The mixed age groups at the preschool and elementary levels invite children to work at their own pace. Classroom environments are designed to facilitate self directed learning, rather than teacher centered instruction. Small class sizes and low student/teacher ratios allow for individualized learning plans, as well as one-on-one and small group lessons.

Toddler Program (ages 22 mo. - 3 years)
This program is built upon goals that will develop the child’s inner sense of self. The prepared classroom allows each child to respond to that inherent need to explore the world, to learn the boundaries that will keep them safe, and to experience the fundamentals of working well with others. The toddler environment recognizes the developmentally sensitive periods of the two and young three year old, focusing on support for emerging language, developing independence, and mastering large motor coordination.

Of fundamental importance is the gradual separation of each child from his or her primary caretaker, usually the mother. The Montessori toddler program protects this fragile stage of development by creating a very gentle and slow parting of each adult-child couple.*

Preschool/Kindergarten Program (ages 3-6 years)
Our four preschool classes each offer the traditional Montessori materials in curriculum areas of Practical Life, Language, Sensorial, and Math. The program is enriched with studies in nature and science, Spanish language, world cultures and geography, as well as art and music. With a school wide emphasis on the values of peace, empathy and kindness, students absorb the importance of taking care of their community, both small and large.

Lower Elementary (ages 6 – 9 years)
Upper Elementary (ages 9 – 12 years)

In their individualized work the children learn to set goals, to manage time, to organize projects and to use a variety of resources. In addition to using the advanced Montessori materials for math, grammar and science, the students read and discuss children’s classics, and express themselves in art, music, drama, and poetry. Creative writing is a daily activity. A foreign language, physical education and field trips are also included [in the curriculum].*

Montessori elementary programs give youngsters basic learning skills, confidence, self-esteem, an appreciation of other cultures and peaceful techniques for conflict resolution – qualities that will serve them well in any future learning situations.*

Before and After School Care
This optional extension of the school day is available by contract for the full year or on a drop-in basis. The afternoon includes lunch and rest/nap time, and a relaxed home-like environment for afternoon play. Opportunities for arts and crafts projects, creative fantasy play, and extended outdoor recess allow children to pursue activities that may differ from the morning classroom work while the classroom ground rules “respect for others and the environment” remain consistent.

Brixham Montessori Friends School began as a preschool in Portsmouth, NH in 1997. Within three short years, the preschool outgrew its space and relocated to York, ME where the school increased the number of students, added an elementary program and established itself as a highly reputable Montessori school serving Seacoast Maine and New Hampshire. Teachers at BMFS are exceptional. Highly qualified and experienced, head teachers hold a minimum of a Masters degree and a Maine state teaching certificate or certificate from the an accredited Montessori teacher education program. Professional support, low staff turn-over, and encouragement from a dedicated school community help to make BMFS a wonderful place to learn and teach. Parents at BMFS play a critical role in the governance of the school. Parents are elected to sit on the school’s Board of Directors and many of the Board’s task forces, such as public relations, building and grounds, fundraising, and education oversight are made up of parent volunteers.
