elementary Program (6-11 years)

The Elementary Program at Brixham Montessori Friends School supports children during a powerful stage of intellectual growth, curiosity, and social awareness. Montessori elementary students are eager thinkers- asking big questions, making connections, and developing a strong sense of responsibility for their learning and their community.

Purposeful, Independent Learning

Through individualized work and guided collaboration, students learn how to:

  • Set goals and manage their time

  • Plan, organize, and complete projects

  • Use a variety of academic and research resources

  • Reflect on their work and revise thoughtfully

Advanced Montessori materials support deep understanding in mathematics, grammar, science, and cultural studies, while encouraging logical thinking, problem-solving, and conceptual mastery.

A Rich & Integrated Curriculum

Elementary students engage in a broad, interdisciplinary curriculum that balances academic rigor with creativity and expression. In addition to core Montessori studies, students:

  • Read and discuss classic and contemporary children’s literature

  • Write daily, with an emphasis on creative and expressive writing

  • Explore art, music, drama, poetry, and performance

  • Participate in foreign language, physical education, and regular field studies

Learning extends beyond the classroom with an emphasis on health and wellness, service learning, and nature-based education- helping students connect their academic work to the real world.

Social Growth & Global Awareness

Montessori elementary education nurtures not only academic skill, but also confidence, self-esteem, and ethical awareness. Students develop:

  • Respect for diverse cultures and perspectives

  • Peaceful strategies for communication and conflict resolution

  • Collaboration, leadership, and empathy

These skills prepare children to thrive in future academic settings while becoming thoughtful, compassionate members of their communities.

We are very happy with the experiences and learning that our daughter is having at BMFS. It is clear to us that she is gaining early life skills, has a community of supportive friends and teachers around her, and looks forward to her life at school. Our daughter began at BMFS at 20 months, and we were instantly amazed and excited at how quickly she began to explore and attempt new skills- shoe putting on, clothing, letter play, and tasting. It has not stopped and we as parents are confident we made the right choice. We do not hesitate to recommend BMFS.
